Why Your Startup’s Website Doesn’t Convert (And How to Fix It)

Cool. But what do you actually do?
Your first sentence should pass the “does my mom get it?” test.
No buzzwords. No metaphors. Just say what you do and who it's for, clearly and quickly.
Examples:
Automated reporting for indie SaaS founders.
On-demand tutors for German-speaking students.
Visual bug tracking for remote dev teams.
If I can’t get it in five seconds, I’m gone.
2. Your design looks like a no-code template (because it is)
Not a crime. But if you don’t customize anything — fonts, colors, icons — you look like every other AI-generated MVP.
Perception matters.
If your product is thoughtful but your site looks rushed, users assume your product is rushed too.
3. No one knows what to click
I scroll. I scroll. I scroll. And then… where’s the CTA?
Make your call to action painfully obvious:

See how it works
And repeat it. Don’t just hide it at the bottom.
4. You’re talking about yourself, not the user
Founders love saying:
We’re building a better way to...
Our mission is...
Our platform enables...
Users care about themselves.
Frame it around their pain, their goal, their transformation.
Instead of:
“We built a modern analytics platform for growing teams.”
Try:
“Finally understand your data without calling a data scientist.”
5. It’s just a placeholder
A lot of early startup websites are just quick pages someone threw together to have something live.
But your website isn’t a placeholder. It’s your first sales conversation.
If your product is real, your website should look and sound like it is too.
How to fix it fast
Simplify the copy. Remove 80 percent of the fluff.
Use real visuals, not random SaaS illustrations.
Make your CTA clear and repeat it a few times.
Talk to the user, not about yourself.
Customize your template. Change the font. Pick better icons.
Your homepage is your pitch deck. Make it count.
